BIGSTEPSDecember 2022
BigSteps is a pouf that celebrates the tradition and craft behind esparto grass, a fiber that grows in the arid regions of the Western Mediterranean and is typically used to make baskets, rugs, and espadrilles. The cord that gathers around the piece is a specific braiding technique exclusively used to make the famous Spanish espardeñas. The top plane of the seat begins with an espadrille silhouette at the center, made in the traditional way, then expands out through concentric turns or the cord. This seat can be used in multiple orientations, and the handles that appear through the volume enable effortless movement of the piece within a space.
Big Steps is an object that reimagines the human relationship with nature, slow materials and old knowledge. I believe the ecological challenges we face can be partly addressed through the objects we make and use.
